Chesapeake Bay Fishermen Still Embrace Faith Brought to Them during the Second Great Awakening by the “Parson of the Islands” Teresa Neumann (May 29, 2008) “At the service on Smith Island to bless the crab fleet at the beginning of this uncertain season, a female soloist sang ‘The Song of the Captain’s Wife,’ asking God for protection from wind, waves and other forces beyond their control.” (Tylerton, Md.)%u2014The Washington Post has reported on some Chesapeake crabbers who, though their faith is being tested, are trusting in Jesus for their crab harvests this year; a season that is predicted to “try their souls.” One such place is Smith Island in Maryland, which reportedly is the “heart of a waterman’s culture still on fire” from the Second Great Awakening revival of the1800′s. Joshua Thomas, nicknamed the “Parson of the Islands” was said to have ministered in the bay’s islands in a log canoe he called the “Methodist.” The article explains why the crab population in Chesapeake Bay has fallen so drastically in the last decade and lists two Scriptures that these fishermen rely on, one out of Ezekiel and the Gospel of John, read during a church service recently, where Jesus instructs the disciples to cast their net on the side of the boat and in so doing they haul in extraordinary amounts of fish. “We don’t plant, you know, our harvest. We pray for a good harvest,” said Duke Marshall. “As of 2008, we’ve never been let down.” Some reportedly say they are already seeing signs of God answering their prayers.
